Male Anastrepha suspensa exhibit a repertoire of “copulatory” behaviors involving the female head. This study examined the effect of female decapitation on copulation duration, and quantity and distribution of sperm in the four storage organs. Copulation duration and sperm storage were highly variable (16 to 160 min and 0 to 2,643 sperm, respectively). Sperm quantity variation was due primarily to storage patterns among three spermathecae. There was no significant correlation (Pearson, P > 0.05) between body size and copulation duration, or sperm stored in relation to both variables. Although mean copulation duration was significantly shorter for non-decapitated females (t-test, t = 8.48, P < 0.001), sperm quantity and storage patterns were not significantly different. These data suggest the near autonomy of the abdominal ganglion’s role in any female mediated effects on sperm storage.  相似文献

Whole-cell and cell-extract experiments were performed to study the mechanism of oxalate metabolism in the acetogenic bacterium Moorella thermoacetica. In short-term, whole-cell assays, oxalate consumption was low unless cell suspensions were supplemented with CO(2), KNO(3), or Na(2)S(2)O(3). Cell extracts catalyzed the oxalate-dependent reduction of benzyl viologen. Oxalate consumption occurred concomitant to benzyl viologen reduction; when benzyl viologen was omitted, oxalate was not appreciably consumed. Based on benzyl viologen reduction, specific activities of extracts averaged 0.6 micromol oxalate oxidized min(-1) mg protein(-1). Extracts also catalyzed the formate-dependent reduction of NADP(+); however, oxalate-dependent reduction of NADP(+) was negligible. Oxalate- or formate-dependent reduction of NAD(+) was not observed. Addition of coenzyme A (CoA), acetyl-CoA, or succinyl-CoA to the assay had a minimal effect on the oxalate-dependent reduction of benzyl viologen. These results suggest that oxalate metabolism by M. thermoacetica requires a utilizable electron acceptor and that CoA-level intermediates are not involved.  相似文献

Novel populations pose unusual challenges for wildlife managers because knowledge regarding the source of these populations is essential to develop sound management approaches. One example that illustrates the complexity of this issue is the small population of red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) identified in northeastern Illinois in the 1970s. To elucidate the source of the red squirrel population in Illinois, we examined both contemporary and less recent patterns of genetic structure using nuclear microsatellite loci and mitochondrial DNA. Analyses revealed the Illinois subpopulation was primarily comprised of descendents of immigrants from Indiana, but there was also evidence of a translocation of squirrels from Minnesota. We recommend continued protection for the red squirrel in Illinois due to its restricted geographic range, small population size, and status as a native population. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Sclerotinia sclerotiorum D-E7 was studied to determine the impact of nutritional supplements and monosaccharides on growth, oxalate accumulation, and culture pH in broth media (initial pH c. 5). Cultures with 0.1% nutritional supplement (tryptone, yeast extract, or soytone) yielded minimal growth, 2-3 mM oxalate, and a final culture pH of 4.2-4.8. In contrast, cultures with 0.1% nutritional supplement and 25 mM glucose yielded significant growth, minimal oxalate (<1 mM), and a final culture pH of 2.8-3.7. Similar trends were observed when glucose in 0.1% soytone cultures was replaced with 25 mM d-mannose, l-arabinose, or d-xylose. With 1% soytone-25 mM glucose cultures, growth and oxalate accumulation ( approximately 21 mM) occurred with little change in initial pH. This was not the case with 1% soytone-250 mM glucose cultures; increased glucose levels resulted in a decrease in oxalate accumulation ( approximately 7 mM) and in final culture pH (3.4). Time-course studies with these cultures revealed that oxalate accumulation was suppressed during growth when the culture pH dropped to <4. Overall, these results indicate that (1) the decrease in external pH (i.e. acidification) was independent of oxalate accumulation and (2) acidification coupled to glucose-dependent growth regulated oxalate accumulation by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum.  相似文献

Few studies and reports in the body of literature have directly addressed the issue of whether resistance exercise sets should be performed to failure. Research has clearly demonstrated the superiority of performing multiple sets vs. single sets for increases in maximal strength. However, there is little direct evidence to decide conclusively whether or not multiple sets should be performed to failure. Therefore, the purpose of this research note was to discuss what is currently known concerning the application of training to failure and to stimulate further research on this topic. Although not essential for increases in muscular characteristics such as strength and hypertrophy, training to failure might allow advanced lifters to break through training plateaus when incorporated periodically into short-term microcycles. Because muscular hypertrophy is a key contributor to long-term increases in maximal strength, advanced lifters should consider training to failure occasionally. The potential mechanisms by which training to failure might provide an advantage are through greater activation of motor units and secretion of growth-promoting hormones. However, training to failure is not an effective stimulus without lifting at a sufficient intensity (percentage of 1 repetition maximum). Furthermore, training to failure should not be performed repeatedly over long periods, due to the high potential for overtraining and overuse injuries. Therefore, the training status and the goals of the lifter should guide the decision-making process on this issue.  相似文献

There has been a renewed interest in allelopathy as a plant?Cplant interaction as more plant ecologists have become involved in studying biological invasions. This resurgence highlights a major deficiency in our understanding of allelopathy??the lack of a well-developed ecological context for the interaction. In contrast to allelopathy, the plant?Cplant interaction of competition has a strong theoretical foundation as well as a large body of supporting empirical studies. We suggest that the plant-herbivore defense literature provides a mature and well-developed framework from which a broader ecological context for allelopathy can be developed. Here, we discuss three broad classes of questions, drawn from the herbivore defense literature, which may help to develop an appropriate ecological context for allelopathy. These questions focus on (1) variation in allelopathic expression within species, (2) community level variation in allelopathy across species, and (3) variation in the impacts of allelopathy on associated species. Addressing such broad population and community level themes in a variety of systems will be necessary to fully develop an ecological context for allelopathy and provide a theoretical basis for understanding its role in plant communities.  相似文献

本研究利用mtDNACOI基因的部分序列对11种群不同寄主的栗瘿蜂Dryocosm us kuriphilus Yasumatsu遗传多态性进行了分析。在获得的660bp的序列中,变异位点(V)80个,包括简约信息位点(Pi)15个和自裔位点(Si)65个。T、A、C、G平均含量分别为30.6%、43.3%、13.7%和12.4%,A+T平均值为73.9%,远高于G+C的26.1%,表现出明显的A+T偏向性。为害锥栗的六步溪、大围山种群与茅栗、板栗的不同地理种群,以及为害欧洲栗的意大利Piedmont种群之间,基因序列完全一致或者遗传距离在0.3%以内,无论是NJ系统树还是UPGMA系统树均聚合在同一分支内,亲缘关系较近。而为害锥栗的采自福建省建瓯市水源镇的水源种群、福建省周宁县纯池镇的纯池种群,与其它各栗瘿蜂种群的基因序列差异较大,遗传距离均大于2%,在NJ和UPGMA系统树中水源种群和纯池种群均聚合为一单独的分支,与其它种群形成的分支互为姊妹分支。据此我们认为水源种群和纯池种群很有可能属于不同的物种,有进一步研究的必要。  相似文献

为检测麦氏安瘿蜂Andricus mairei Kieffer有无Wolbachia感染, 本研究对其岳阳、 长沙和邵阳3种群雌、 雄成虫体内Wolbachia的wsp基因进行了PCR检测, 进而对获得的基因片段进行了序列分析。结果显示, 麦氏安瘿蜂岳阳、 长沙及邵阳种群雌、 雄成虫均有Wolbachia感染, 除邵阳种群雌成虫的感染率为80%之外, 其他均为100%。3个种群Wolbachia的wsp基因序列长度皆为561 bp, 且序列完全一致。麦氏安瘿蜂Wolbachia的wsp基因序列与已知瘿蜂族(Cynipini) Neuroterus macropterus、 Biorhiza pallida及Andricus solitarius (strain 1)以及Synergini族Synergus crassicornis感染的Wolbachia的一致性达95%。除Synergini族Ceroptres cerri感染的Wolbachia属于B群(B group)之外, 瘿蜂感染的Wolbachia均属于A群(A group)。在NJ系统树中, 麦氏安瘿蜂与瘿蜂族Neuroterus macropterus、 Biorhiza pallida和Andricus solitarius (strain 1)及Synergini族Synergus crassicornis感染的Wolbachia聚合在同一分支。此外, 麦氏安瘿蜂岳阳、 长沙和邵阳种群均获得了雌、 雄成虫, 其雌性率分别为15.3%, 12.1%和19.8%, 表现出明显的雄性比偏高。结果提示与瘿蜂族的其他已报道的种类一样, Wolbachia与麦氏安瘿蜂的共生并不诱导其营产雌孤雌生殖。  相似文献

Homosexual pairing between males occurs under natural conditions in a wide variety of taxa, including many insect species, but few studies have investigated how environmental and social conditions affect same-sex pairing in insects. We investigated factors affecting homosexual pairing in male Japanese beetles (Popillia japonica Newman) in the field and in the laboratory. Specifically, we investigated how time of day, sex ratio, beetle density, and temperature affected the likelihood of homosexual pairing. In the field, male–male pairs constituted 1–6% of the pairs we collected. Homosexual pairs were more common in the afternoon than in the morning and the evening. Sex ratio, density, and temperature were all related to the likelihood of finding a homosexual pair, but the relationships were not linear. In the laboratory, higher male densities and relatively male-biased sex ratios were associated with an increase in the frequency of homosexual pairs. Homosexual pairs were more frequent at relatively low and relatively high temperatures. Males that mounted other males tended to be smaller than the males that they mounted. In addition, compared to males that were not homosexually paired, there was some indication that the mounting males were smaller, and the mounted males larger, than the unpaired males. Our data suggest that homosexual pairs are a result of males mistaking other males for females, and we hypothesize that the environmental and social factors cause changes in homosexual pairing through their effects on the frequency of pair formation and pair duration.  相似文献
